[iOS] C&C - Red Alert 3 Review

SQ5PTS25YB9Z - C&C series were my favorite franchise in the RTS genre until sometime ago, this was all because of that junk most people stamp C&C Tiberium Twilight, EA however didn't stop there as he created another monstrosity (or maybe not!), this time for the iOS platforms.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert for the iOS was released in 2009, by Electronic Arts. The game follows the original plot of the Red Alert Series, and for those who don't know (do you live under a rock?) starts with that crazy scientist called Einstein creating a parallel universe by "removing" Hitler in the 1920's and by that World War II would never happen, or so he thought. The Soviets took over the German place in the second World War and the Allied Countries would still do their job, and barely succeeding as another great war took place shortly after.

After the disastrous defeat by the hands of the Allies, twice, the USSR in a last effort of trying to regain control of its country and its power went back in time and dealt with the threat which made the Allied Countries so powerful, Einstein himself. With Einstein out of the way, the USSR had won the war but created another faction originated in Japan, which was the Empire of the Rising Sun and while both hatreds were still fueling at war the Empire of the Rising Sun attacked the USSR by surprise.

In the end of the third world war, and its weird campaigns, the Allied armies had won (again). Now the story carries on the iOS game and happens between the Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge and Red Alert 3, this time you see the creation of the Empire of the Rising Sun, how the Soviets obtained the time travel device and how the allied like to stand on their asses all day long, in a way.

The game differs from the iPhone/iPod to the iPad, as in the iPhone the game graphics are up to par and in the iPad it seems that the game as just been upscaled to fit the screen, this however isn't a bad thing as for many of the iPhone users can't seem to use much of the screen to maneuver and correctly press the buttons. The response of the game is pretty good in terms of getting stuff from A to be and pressing the icons (comparing with Simcity DLX, which were also good) but what it lacks on playability flaws in how much was put into the game, simply put the Campaign is too small for the game, and you might not have the desired skill to match people in online match, the plot could have a bit more strength and if you don't have a iPhone 4 or an iPad prepare yourself for a bit of a loading time.  Not only this, but the game will crash on you most of the time as it happened to me anyway, and went searching for more reviews to see if it was a single incident and it was not, worse is that the game was updated recently and it still crashes for most people, this will test you in every way possible not to through your precious gadget through the window or just deleting the game and see that you have wasted a couple of dollars worthlessly.

In my point of view, the biggest asset of the game is definitely the multi-player, and if you are a nut for multi-player games, this one is for you on the go, or if you find someone to play with on-line, because last time I went on-line it was with only a hand full of people and most of them seemed friends as they wouldn't let anyone play. Another thing you might find attractive is the skirmish mode, the game increases its longevity and your skill by going on a skirmish before hitting the MP

My recommendation for this game is really REALLY REALLY think before you buy this game, it's not crucial for your iOS library, and you wouldn't miss it much as the price is steep and really not worth it anymore ($4,99), but if you have an iPad you can get it cheap for $2,99 this week as it is on sale with a bunch of other games so you might want to check your iTunes now, if you are that interested, but you have been warned, the game crashes a bunch, its sometimes slow and its main feature needs on-line.
